'Pyramid' Sculptural Vessels

Sculptural yet functional, regular yet asymmetrical, the Pyramid series explores the transformation of sheet metal through form, surface and orientation. The triangular vessels continue Sheng Zhang’s interest in minimal visual language, rhythm and tactile qualities, while blurring the boundary between functional object and sculpture. Each piece is reversible and can be displayed in either orientation, shifting between a sculptural object and a functional vase while retaining the same underlying structure.

 

The works combine traditional silversmithing skills with contemporary fabrication methods. The metal sheets are textured using a corrugated rolling mill and fabricated with PUK welding rather than conventional soldering.
